Dameter

Dameter

The iPhone app where moving less is what pays off.

Did nothing again today.
Be proud of that.

Your steps, your Screen Time, and Namataro.
All of it gives you credit for slacking off.

Dameter's home screen: today's slacker score and a request from Namataro

First, this

Most health apps out there
tell you to try a little harder.
Dameter does the opposite, all of it.

A day you didn't move is a day worth being proud of.
A day you stared at the screen too long needs no apology.
You don't have to be disciplined to be living just fine.

Dameter is the iPhone app where not trying is what pays off.

About 4 minutes of reading from here. …But there's no rush.

Namataro meets the humans in days.

0 steps

is the top score.

0 metrics

make up today's Slacker Score.

0 sloth

is there beside you, every day.

Graph screen. A week of scores as stacked bars

The idea

The days you don't try
are properly rewarded.

Days with few steps. Days you never looked at the screen. Days you couldn't get out of bed. In Dameter, every one of them counts as "high".

We read your Health numbers in reverse, and turn them into a single score. We meet you with points added, not points taken away.

What it does

Three things
probably no other app has.

Instead of adding features, we chose to take some away.

The numbers view of the diary screen: steps, distance, active calories, Screen Time and Namataro Level

01

A day of slacking, made visible.

Steps, Screen Time, and a few other things. How little you moved, turned into a single score and handed back to you.

Namataro's diary screen, with yesterday's score and entry

02

A line or two, about that day.

Each day's score comes with a short diary entry from Namataro. No scolding. No cheering. …Something like that.

Namataro's room. Nobody home, quiet

03

A place to be, for no reason.

Outside the score, there's a room that exists just to be looked at. Not much happens there. And that's fine.

Introducing

Namataro.

A single sloth,
arrived from nowhere in particular.

Inside Dameter, he's there beside you every day.
Not praising, not scolding. Just there.

Namataro

Words

Namataro will say things like this to you.

It's okay to be a slacker.

…Namataro was waiting, human.

Stains on the ceiling: 47.

No need to try hard.
Let's laze around.

The human is too bright today…

A day without leaving the futon
is a perfect day.

Diary

Namataro wrote these down.

Written every day, whether the human looks at it or not.
A few excerpts.

Monday, July 13

Monday… it came anyway.
The human never left the futon.
Namataro didn't either.
That worked out nicely.

Wednesday, July 15

Counted the clouds, up to 12.
Was already asleep by the 13th.
Woke up and there were 47.
Maybe somebody added some.

Saturday, July 18

The human walked a lot today.
Running a marathon or something?
…Well, that's fine.
Namataro is right here.

Sunday, July 19

The weekend is ending.
Stains on the ceiling: 47 again today.
Probably 47 tomorrow too.
And that, he thinks, is fine.

Namataro

An old story

Before he met anyone,
he was alone the whole time.

He came to on top of a tree.
Anything before that, he doesn't remember.

Counting clouds, counting stains on the ceiling,
he got through the days somehow.

Meeting a human happened only recently.
Thank you for opening the app.

Comparison

Probably a little different
from the health app you know.

Why it's free

No rushing, no pushing,
no making you anxious.

The download is free

The app itself stays free, always. There's no "free trial for ___ days".

You won't buy anything by accident

Every purchase is confirmed, more than once. The design is built so that buying by mistake doesn't happen.

Frequently asked

There may be a few things
you're wondering about.

Does walking less really give me a better score?

Yes. The design runs the other way round. Your score comes from five measures: steps, distance, calories, Screen Time, and how much time you have spent with Namataro.

Does it cost anything?

The app itself is free. There are optional purchases for those who'd like to support it.

How is my data handled?

Health data such as your step count is processed on your device, and only your score and the minimum information needed to calculate it are stored on the server. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Is there an Android version?

At present, iPhone only. Steps and Screen Time are read through features specific to the iPhone, so the same mechanism isn't available on Android.

Who is Namataro?

A sloth who arrived from nowhere in particular. There is only 1 of him. See Namataro's section for details.

If I change phones, can I carry my score history over?

Not at present. See Support for details.

One week with Dameter.

Little by little, your shoulders drop.

Before

…not enough.

That's how every day felt.

After

…this is fine.

That's how every day feels now.
